Life Lessons I Learned from Yoga

I have a confession to make. If you would have approached me about two years ago and asked me to do yoga, I would have laughed in your face. Why? Because, “I don’t have the patience to sit in a position for hours on end. It just looks so boring!” Boy was I wrong (and boy am I ever happy that I was). Through yoga, I have learned so many life lessons, made some long-lasting connections, found my balance (literally and figuratively), and build some serious strength (physically and mentally).

1. When you don’t think you can do any more, just breathe, re-focus, and keep going. You always have a little more in you.

2. Keep your head up, look forward, and you won’t fall flat on your face.

3. Your hips aren’t as wide as you think they are. If you stand with your legs “hip width apart”, it usually means that your feet should only be about a fist apart. Something to remember next time you’re jean shopping…

4. Mind your own business. Nothing exists beyond your mat, so stop looking around and focus on your own damn form!

5. If your whole body isn’t engaged, you’re probably not doing it right. You can’t half-ass anything you do if you want to achieve your full potential. Not in yoga, not in business, and not in life.

6. There’s always room for improvement.

7. There’s always more to learn.

8. Honour and respect others. At the end of each practice, it’s typical to bow your head and say, “Namaste,” meaning, “The Divine light in me acknowledges the Divine light in you.” We often forget that everyone goes through hardships that we cannot imagine, so it’s important to step back and acknowledge that you respect the other people in the room.

There are so many other lessons that can be pulled from this beautiful practice, but these are the main ones that I’ve taken with me. Thank you to all the wonderful teachers who teach these lessons ever day!

Namaste.
